The dig revealed eighteen superimposed temple levels within the main Enki sanctuary mound, spanning from the earliest Ubaid period (c. 5500 BCE) through the Uruk period (c. 3500 BCE). This is the single most important physical evidence for the origins of organised Mesopotamian religion: an unbroken stratigraphic sequence of sacred architecture at what the Sumerians themselves identified as the first city and the home of Enki, god of wisdom and fresh water.

The proposed dates (c. 5500 BCE for the lowest level) rest on pottery typology correlated with radiocarbon dating; some specialists argue the earliest Ubaid I horizon could extend to c. 5900 BCE based on regional parallels. The identification of the building as a temple (rather than a storehouse or elite house) is made on the basis of the central altar/podium feature, the niche for a cult statue, and the food-offering debris — a standard archaeological interpretive framework, but interpretive nonetheless. The site's later textual identification with Enki cannot be read back uncritically onto the earliest levels.
