Genesis 6–9 (Noah flood narrative) — text and composition scholarship
The Hebrew flood narrative, universally recognized in source criticism as a composite of two interwoven strands (non-Priestly/"J" and Priestly), with doublets (two animal-count commands, two flood durations) that are themselves evidence of literary layering. For transmission analysis the key facts are: (a) every plausible composition date is at least a millennium later than the dated Mesopotamian flood tablets; (b) the parallels to Gilgamesh XI/Atra-ḫasīs are structural and sequential, not just thematic; (c) Judah's scribal elite spent the exile (597–539 BCE) inside Babylonia, where the flood tradition was canonical literature.
Composite structure: P and non-P flood strands disagree on details (7 pairs vs. 2 of clean animals; 40 days vs. 150) yet were interleaved rather than harmonized — standard evidence for redaction of older written sources (Carr 2011, chs. 3–4).
Shared sequence with Gilgamesh XI: divine decision → warned hero → boat to specification, pitch-sealed → animals loaded → flood → mountain grounding → bird reconnaissance → sacrifice → deity/deities smell the offering → divine commitment never to repeat. The smelling parallel (Gen 8:21 ∥ Gilg. XI 161–163) is the most quoted single correspondence.
Distinctive Israelite transformations: moral (not demographic) motive; one god decreeing and saving (vs. divine-council conflict); covenant and rainbow ending. Borrowed machinery, reworked theology.
Composition date vs. attestation date kept separate per vault rule: composition c. 7th–5th c. BCE (inferential, class-3-adjacent literary criticism); attestation c. 2nd–1st c. BCE (Dead Sea Scrolls, class 2).
Documentary/supplementary models of Pentateuch composition are themselves contested (Neo-documentarians vs. European supplementary models); dating of strands ranges ±2 centuries by school. None of this controversy moves Genesis earlier than the Mesopotamian attestations. Finkel is used only for orientation (Ark Tablet, c. 1750 BCE, a private OB letter-tablet with ark-building instructions — corroborates how widespread the tradition was; cite his academic edition for load-bearing claims).
